Seamen's Center, Wilmington, DE

Have you had a Banana or a Pineapple recently?  Did you know they come from the 400 - 500 vessels that arrive each year at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware? People in Chicago and other parts of the country eat the delicious fruits that come from the Port of Wilmington, Delaware. An average crew size is 23 men with rarely a few women. These vessels come from Central America and Colombia, South America. Fruit leaving the port travels to one-third of all US Markets.

The Seamen's Center in Wilmington collects items for these seafarers, including clothes and other supplies, along with knitted or crocheted hats and scarves.   Do you want to help?

You can open the document below to view the specific patterns (no substitutes, please) necessary to create these items. You can bring or drop off these hats and scarves at SJB Church , or you can donate yarn (indicated in the directions below - colors for men).  If you do not know how to knit or crochet, perhaps we could arrange classes to help you, or go to YouTube and find helpful videos. Fill our the form below if you would like to learn or have any questions.

Lastly, perhaps praying daily (provided below) to remember these souls as they travel the wide and at times treacherous oceans of the world.

Prayer for all Seafarers
O Lord of the great oceans, we praise and magnify Your Holy Name. You have given us a highway on which we may travel to many nations and come to know many peoples. We give you thanks for all Seafarers who navigate our ships and carry cargoes all over the world, for our lives are enriched through their labors. Forgive us when we forget how much we owe them and may we rejoice in the skills and courage they bring to their calling. Never leave or forsake them but go with them as they sail the lonely seas and bring them safely home to those who love them. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
